We use “indirect calorimetry” which is the Gold Standard method of measuring VO₂ max, normally only available in exclusive testing laboratories. This involves wearing a close-fitting, non-restrictive mask while exercising, while we accurately measure the gases that you breathe in and out (oxygen and carbon dioxide), your heart rate and much more.
This information allows us to calculate your VO₂ max, aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, accurate training zones, your metabolic flexibility and substrate utilisation (how much fat or carbohydrate you burn at different intensities) along with really important insights into your health.
You do not need to be fit to do the test: it’s designed to meet you exactly where you are and help you to improve efficiently and safely.

Who benefits from a VO2 max test?
Absolutely ANYBODY can benefit from VO2 testing. VO2 max is a vital sign in itself, but we don’t just give you a number; we analyse how your body reaches VO₂ max and explain what may be supporting or limiting your performance and health.
Most people who have heard of or thought about VO2 max testing will likely be those that take their fitness training quite seriously, and want to understand their personal physiology better in order to maximise gains in their performance. Whether you are an endurance athlete, competitive sports person, functional training competitor (e.g. Hyrox) and anything in between, doing a VO2 max test could give you that competitive edge you’ve been looking for.
However, the test isn’t just for ambitious athletes – anybody who wants to optimise their own health or fitness, wherever your starting point, can benefit from knowing your numbers and using them to guide your training.
Why Do a VO₂ Max Test?
Most fitness watches and apps estimate VO₂ max and training zones. Their accuracy varies widely, leading to misleading results, inefficient training and sometimes injury. Also, the VO2 max number itself is just one part of the story.
A professional VO₂ max test gives you:
- Your true VO₂ max based on gas analysis – the Gold Standard method
- Accurate, personalised training zones – discover that all-important Zone 2 with clinical accuracy
- Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds defined by validated physiological methods
- Fat vs carbohydrate usage at different intensities
- Precise calorie expenditure – perfect for weight management
- Essential health insights into your metabolic flexibility, respiratory efficiency, cardiovascular health
- Personal strengths and limitations in performance
Every test is analysed by a Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctor to ensure accuracy, safety, and clinically relevant interpretation.
If it’s good enough for elite athletes to do regularly, then it’s good enough for all of us. At Active Medicine we like to make elite sports medicine services such as VO2 max testing, accessible to all. Especially in the North East of Scotland.
